Bell was born on March 3, 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland to Alexander Melville Bell ad Eliza Grace Symonds. His family life profoundly influenced his research on hearing and speech; his father and grandfather were elocutionists and both his mother and his wife were deaf. This research lead to experimentations with hearing devices that lead to his first invention of the telephone. His invention had a profound impact on the way we communicate throughout the world.
