On January 22, 1875, pioneering silent film director D.W. Griffith was born in LaGrange, Kentucky. Dubbed by some as “the man who invented Hollywood,” Griffith’s groundbreaking work laid the foundations for many of the basic techniques for film making. He founded United Artist together with Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks.
