On May 16, 1929, the very first Academy Awards ceremony were held in Los Angeles, California. Hosted by renowned silent film star Douglas Fairbanks, the ceremony lasted just 15 minutes. With only 250 people in attendance, the Academy awarded 15 Oscars to the best films of 1927 and 1928. Today, the Academy Awards is the film industry’s biggest event of the year and is watched by millions around the world.
