On this day in 1814, Francis Scott Key penned the poem “Defence of Fort McHenry” after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British forces during the War of 1812. After it was published, the words were set to music and renamed “The Star-Spangled Banner.” In 1931, the song was officially named the national anthem of the United States.
