Astaire got his start as a dancer at the tender age of four. By the age of six, he was performing along with his sister Adele as a popular vaudeville act. The siblings changed their name from “Austerlitz” to “Astaire” and thanks their father’s salesmanship, quickly booked major contracts to perform.

He later went on to pursue his solo career and found a remarkable dance partner, actress Ginger Rogers. Although at first reluctant to become known as part of yet another dance team, the pair would ultimately make ten films together. On screen, Astaire made his dancing look easy. However, he was known to be a perfectionist and spent endless hours practicing his choreography.
