Have you read Love in the Time of Cholera? Today we celebrate the life of Colombian novelist Gabriel García Márquez, who was born on this day in 1927.

Raised by his maternal grandparents, Márquez grew up listening to his grandmother’s fantastical and magical stories, which were told to him as if they were real. His grandmother’s storytelling style greatly influence his own writing style, which would become known as “magical realism.”

Known affectionally as Gabo throughout Latin America, Márquez is considered one of the most significant authors of the 20th century. His novels, One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera, have garnered worldwide acclaim. In 1982, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

He died on April 17, 2014 at the age of 87 in Mexico City, Mexico.
