On January 12, 1876, American journalist and author Jack London was born in San Francisco, California.

The author is best remembered for his novels, Call of the Wild and White Fang, which are both set in Alaska and the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush. He was one of the first fiction writers to gain worldwide celebrity and fortune from his works of fiction alone.
London died on November 22, 1916 at the age of 40.
