Have you seen today’s Google doodle commemorating the 180th birthday of English philosopher John Venn? He is most famous for inventing the Venn diagram, a useful way to describe logical relationships between sets.

John Venn was born August 4, 1834 in Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire to Martha Sykes and Henry Venn, who was the rector of the parish of Drypool. Venn was descended from a long line of church evangelicals, including his grandfather Rev. John Venn. Although today the diagrams are known as “Venn diagrams,” Venn himself did not use the term. Instead, he referred to his invention as “Eulerian Circles.”

Fun fact: John Venn is the second cousin once removed of author E.M. Foster.
