Langston Hughes

On February 1, 1902, American poet, novelist and playwright Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri. Hughes was one of the earliest innovators of jazz poetry and a leading figure of the Harlem Renaissance. Raised mainly by his maternal grandmother, Mary Patterson, Hughes often credited her for instilling in him a lasting sense of racial pride.
