Profile of the Day: Margaret Mitchell

Margaret Mitchell

Are you a fan of Gone With the Wind? On this day in 1936, author Margaret Mitchell published the beloved novel for the first time.

Mitchell began writing the best-selling novel out of boredom while she was recovering from an injury. Set in Georgia during the American Civil War and Reconstruction era, Gone With the Wind was popular with American readers right from the start. A year later, she received a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her work and just three years after publication in 1939, the book was adapted into the now classic film starring Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable.

Sadly, Gone With the the Wind would be the only book Mitchell would publish during her lifetime. On August 11, 1949, she was struck by a car as she crossed the street with her husband. She died of her injuries five days later.
