Today the United States celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day! On this day, the nation observes the birthday of the great Civil Rights leader.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia to Reverend Martin Luther King, Sr. and Alberta Williams. A pastor, humanitarian and activist, King played a pivotal role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience. His inspiring work led to the end of segregation in the South and the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

His leadership was fundamental to the movement’s success and continues to inspire people all around the world.
