Percival Lowell

On March 13, 1855, mathematician and astronomer Percival Lowell was born. Lowell is best known for fueling speculation that there were canals on Mars. He also formed the beginning of the effort that led to the discovery of Pluto. In fact, the naming of Pluto was influenced by Percival Lowell’s initials “PL.”
