Profile of the Day: Sean Connery

Today we remember actor Sean Connery on what would have been his 91st birthday.

Thomas Sean Connery was born on August 25, 1930 in Edinburgh, Scotland to Euphemia McBain, a cleaning woman, and Joseph Connery, a factory worker and lorry driver. Named after his paternal grandfather, Connery went by the name “Tommy” growing up. Before becoming an actor, Connery’s first job was a milkman at the age of 13. Three years later, he joined the Royal Navy.

His big break came in 1962 when he landed the role of secret agent James Bond in the film Dr. No. The part would prove to be one of the defining roles of his career and become one of the most iconic characters in the history of cinema. In 1988, Connery won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Untouchables. Over the course of his long career, Connery found success in a wide variety of films including Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Hunt for Red October, and The Rock. In 2006, he officially retired from acting.

Connery died on October 31, 2020 at the age of 90 in his home in the Bahamas.
