The Big Tree: Approaching 50 Million Profiles

Posted December 2, 2010 by Geni | No Comment

At Geni, our goal is to provide the genealogy community with tools for collaboration, and to ultimately create a single family tree for the world.  As growth of the Big Tree (the largest connected tree on Geni) continues, we find ourselves getting closer and closer to a huge milestone:  50 million connected profiles.

This week we launched a World Family Tree page that allows the community to see the current status of the Big Tree and some other interesting information.

The top of the World Family Tree page displays the total number of profiles in the Big Tree.  This number updates automatically a few times a minute.  You’ll notice that sometimes it will increase as smaller trees are merged into the Big Tree, and sometimes it will decrease as profiles are removed from or merged within the Big Tree.  We’ve found that it can be difficult to avoid watching this page for minutes at a time!

In addition to the Big Tree stats, we also display graphs of growth and merging trends from the past year and some links to popular sections of the site.

We hope you enjoy this new feature, and we’ll continue to update it with more interesting information over the coming months.

12/14/2010 Update: As of this morning, Geni’s user/profile stats are..

  • Profiles in the Big Tree: 49.4 million
  • Total profiles on Geni: 98.6 million
  • Number of Geni users: 5.8 million
