Like many Jews in the Russian empire, Rav Shmuel Leib changed his surname to appear as an only child, to avoid service in the Tsar's army.

Why, of all names, did he choose Horwitz? Does this suggest that he perhaps knew of a connection he had to Levitical Horwitz family, whom the Shlah HaKadosh is of?

I would be interested to hear others' thoughts.

Many moons later I learned from Otsr HaRabanim # 3220 that he was a rabbi in Horovice. This is perhaps why he this line of Lipkin-Salanters chose or became known as a Horowitz, not because they are related to any prior Horowitz families

Clarification: it was his father AL Lipkin who was rabbi in Horovice; that may have been where the family was raised, etc.
