Abner's marriage records are unknown; however, he did marry AND Encel A. Chaffin of Dayton, Ohio has secured a copy of a marriage record in Nelson, Kentucky of Abner Chalfings and Jenny Cox. Leonard B. Chaffin states, "We have no proof, as yet, but this may be the above Abner Chaffin. This is not too far north of the Jackson County, Tennessee line. The above marriage is dated 23 December 1789. This fits very closely with the birth of Abner's first child." (Abner could have been born in North Carolina.)

Abner moved from Burke County, North Carolina to Jackson County, Tennessee about 1799. He founded the Chaffin settlement on Flynn's Creek in Jackson County. He also bought land in Tallow's Hollow, Blackburn's Fork, and on the Roaring River. Farther south along Walton Road, one of the Chaffins is said to have assisted David Crockett lay out the town of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, where Abner had a "powder store" in 1820. His powder mill and grain mill were located on Blackburn's Fork of the Roaring River. He and his son Joseph were engaged in farming and clearing land as well as powder making.

Abner preached the first sermon of the Christian Faith that was ever preached in Flynn's Creek, Tennessee.

Abner Chaffin died possibly in Illinois.
