8. AGATHE de Normandie (-before 1074, bur Bayeux Cathedral). Orderic Vitalis names “Agatham et Constantiam, Adelizam, Adelam et Ceciliam” as the daughters of King William and his wife[105]. According to William of Malmesbury, an unnamed daughter of King William was "affianced by messengers" to King Alfonso[106]. Orderic Vitalis identifies Agatha as the daughter who was betrothed to Harold (see above): he records that “Agatha regis filia”, who had previously been betrothed to “Heraldo”, was betrothed to “Amfurcio regi Galleciæ” but died before the journey and was buried “in ecclesia sanctæ Mariæ...in urbe Bajocensi”[107]. Matthew Paris places her as the fifth daughter (unnamed) betrothed to "Aldefonso Galiciæ regi", but different from the daughter betrothed to Harold[108]. Orderic says that she died en route to Spain, her body being brought back to Bayeux for burial[109]. The betrothal to Alfonso must have been a short-lived arrangement as he married his first wife in 1069[110].

Betrothed (by proxy Caen, Abbey of Holy Trinity [before 1069]) to ALFONSO VI King of Galicia and Leon, son of FERNANDO I King of Castile & his wife Infanta doña Sancha de Léon (Compostela [1037]-Toledo 30 Jun 1109, bur Sahagún, León, San Mancio chapel in the royal monastery of Santos Facundo y Primitivo). He succeeded in 1072 as ALFONSO VI King of Castile.

[Betrothed ([after 1069]) to SIMON de Valois, son of RAOUL [III] “le Grand” Comte de Valois & his first wife Aelis de Bar-sur-Aube (-[30 Sep/1 Oct] 1080 Rome, bur 1082 Rome St Peter). The Vita Simonis records a ficitional speech of William I King of England in which he offers his (unnamed) daughter's hand to Simon, specifying that she had previously been betrothed to "regis Hispaniarum Anfursi et Roberti principis Apuliæ"[111]. The supposed betrothal to Robert of Apulia (which would have to refer to Robert "Guiscard" Duke of Apulia) is unrecorded in the numerous other sources dealing with his life and is probably pure fantasy. This does not instil confidence with respect to the historical accuracy of the whole passage, but if it is correct the daughter in question would presumably have been Agatha who was probably the daughter of King William betrothed to "Amfursio regi Galliciæ" (see above). Count Simon resigned his county in 1077, became a monk and went on pilgrimage to Rome where he died[112].]

Agatha, mentioned by Ordericus Vitalis as one of the daughters of William I of England and Matilda of Flanders, Agatha, who had been betrothed to Harold II (or his illegitimate namesake son), was afterwards demanded in marriage by Alphonso VI of Castile and delivered to his proxies to be conducted to him. But she, who had lost her former spouse who was to her liking, felt extreme repugnance to marry another. The Englishman she had seen and loved, but the Spaniard she was more averse to because she had never set eyes on him. She therefore, fervently prayed to the Almighty that she might never be carried into Spain, but that he would rather take her to himself. Her prayers were heard, and she died a virgin while she was on the road. Her corpse was brought back to and interred in Bayeux in 1079.

m firstly ADELSINDIS, daughter of --- (-after 29 Apr 1050). "Malleni episcopi Gratianopolitani et Wigonis comitis et uxoris eius Adelsendis, filiorumque suorum Umberti et Wigonis" signed a charter dated 26 Aug 1035 relating to the donation of four churches in Vico to the abbey of Saint-Chaffre[2643]. According to Europäische Stammtafeln[2644], the first wife of Guigues [III] was "Gotelana de Clérieux". It appears that this hypothesis must be based on the charter dated [1090] under which "Wigo comes filius Gotelenne" donated property to Cluny[2645]. However, as noted above, a better interpretation of the documentation is that "Gotelenne" was the mother of Guigues [III] not his wife. A charter dated 29 Apr 1050 records the donation by "Guigoni…maiori, qui postea effectus est monachus…et Adelai comitissæ, et alii Guigoni, filio illius Guigonis…et uxori eius Petronillæ" to Saint-Pierre de Vienne[2646].
