Shortly before turning 22, Rupert Hughes married Agnes Wheeler Hedge of Syracuse, New York, whom he had met a few months earlier. He telegraphed his intentions to his father, who sent his blessing and $500 and provided an allowance to the couple for years. ... Divorced from his first wife in 1904 after a much-publicized court battle that ended in shared custody of their daughter, Hughes was married in 1908 to the beautiful Adelaide Mould Bissell, a divorcee and mother of two children.

- EIGHT CO RESPONDENTS, KISSES; AND PINK WRAPPER IN A SUIT. Chicagoan One of the Men Named by New York Artist, Author, and Playwright in Divorce Case Against Wife. NEW YORK. Oct. 8. A pink silk wrapper and the number of co respondents named, one of them a Chicagoan, are the most striking features of the divorce suit pending between Rupert Hughes, playwright, author, sculptor, poet, and artist in general, and his wife, Agnes Hedge Hughes, who was Miss Agnes Wheeler Hedge of Syracuse Hughes once wrote a play entitled "What People Say?" He and his wife are pondering what the Jury will say. ... Mrs. Hughes began suit for divorce, alleging cruelty. Hughes replied with a countersult for a divorce, which was on trial before Supreme Court Justice Clarke and a jury today. R. Hughes named eight men as co respondents: William Herbert Reynolds, Captain Henry R. Lemley, Crowell Campbell, Arthus Conover, Max Krager, Robert J. Grant, James C. Heche, and J. Marmaduke Robinson. Krager is a Chicago musician.
