Kapey Aharon [The Palms of Aharon’s Hands]
Author: Aaron ben Gabriel Halevi from Trebitsch; [Amsterdam, ca. 1750-1769];
Manuscript, 86 pages; Amsterdam: Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana, Hs. Ros 562
Pereq Shira is here part of an ethical work called Kapey Aharon written by
Aaron ben Gabriel Halevi from Trebitsch (West-Moravia). This oeuvre is
considered part of the Mussar literature corpus and includes the well-known
Chovot HaLevavot32 as well. In his introduction, Halevi shares important
stages of his life with his readers, in order to be able to link them to religious
observations.33 After participating in a war in his home country – most
probably the First Silesian War (1740-1742) – he fled to Danzig. There, he was
seized by Prussian troops and imprisoned in a cell where he was chained
for two years in complete darkness. After a court order was issued, Halevi
– now in his forties – was released and left for Amsterdam. Halevi thanks
the Ashkenazi community of Amsterdam for helping him out, mentioning
among others Rabbi Aryeh Leib Löwenstamm, R. Moshe Frankfurter, and
the printer Naftali Hirz Levi.34

32 Chovot HaLevavot (Duties of the Hearts), is the primary work of the Jewish rabbi and philosopher, Bahya ibn Paquda, full name Bahya ben Joseph ibn Pakuda. Ibn Paquda is believed to
have lived in Zaragoza, Spain, in the eleventh century.
