ALAN son of Swein

Alan is the son of Swein son of Thor. This is confirmed by a charter issued by his father, which was witnessed by Alan's son Henry: "henr fil Alani fil Swani". Scone Liber: 125

Marriage

Alan son of Swein married Cecily of Maule. The Scots Peerage IV: 255 This is confirmed by a charter dated 1262, issued at Scone, in the court of Alexander III, King of Scots, by which Sir Gilbert of Ruthven: "Gilbertus dominus de Rothven in Strathern, miles, filius Walteri de Rothven" relinquished certain land in favour of "Willelmo de Mortuo Mari cognato meo". Evidence from the Register of the Monastery of Scone

No date but probably later than 5 May 1240: Charter by which William of Ruthven confirms an earlier charter by which his father, Walter son of Alan of good memory: Walti filij Alani bone memorie pat's mei" confirms that he has given certain land at Tubermure to the canons of Scone. The land in question had originally been given to the canons by Walter's grandfather, Swan son of Thor: "totam t'ram ilam qa'm Swan' filius Thory auus meus eis dedit in Tubermure". Swan's charter was witnessed by his son Walter: "Walto filio Swani" and his grandson Henry son of Alan: "henr fil Alani fil Swani". The charter subsequently issued by Walter son of Alan was witnessed by his son Gilbert and others: "Gilbto filio meo" and William of Ruthven confirmed his father's charter with the consent of his own son Walter: "Walti filij mei". Scone Liber: charter 125 on pp. 90-2

Note by Peter Barns Graham: "We are presently following TSP's report that Alan of Ruthven was son of Sweyn of Crawford. However, we have received advice from a site visitor that Alan of Ruthven's father was called Walter and that Sweyn was Alan's father-in-law. We show here (for the moment, but hope to obtain clarification of the position in due course) that Alan married twice and that his children reported below were all by Cecily de Maule, as reported by TSP. Please note that in due course we will have to remove from this page (at least) one of the references to Sweyn of Crawford - he was surely not both Alan's father and his father-in-law."
