Alexander Ruthven, here treated, is the son of John Ruthven and Marion Peadie. He was born before 8 October 1727, the date upon which his baptism was registered at Glasgow in Lanarkshire, Scotland. His baptismal record reads as follows: "Mr John Ruthven & Marion Peadie a lawfull son Alexander, wit, James Chrystie & Alexr Porterfield".
