About Alice Gray, of St. Mary's & Machodoc

On 26 Nov 1638, Francis Gray applied for a license to marry Alice Moorman, which license was issued (Archives of Maryland, IV, p. 51).  Alice Moorman had been brought to Virginia in 1637 by Capt. Thomas Cornwallis, one of the Council of Maryland (Neill’s Founders of Maryland, p. 78). [Brought to Maryland in the ship "Unity of the Isle of Wight" by Capt Thomas Cornwaleys 11/28/1637 - presumably as one of a group of single "maidens."]. Married in St. George's Hundred, MD; Francis Gray represented the community in that year to the General Assembly of Maryland. He relocated his family to Machodoc in Westmoreland County, Virginia where he patented 1000 acres along Rogers Creek on April 16, 1654.

The Will of Francis Gray was dated 7 June 1667 and was proved at Court on 31 July 1667. It reads in part:

"....Unto my loving wife Alice Grey and my son Francis Grey all my moveable estate such as horses, cattle, hogs &c... ....Unto my son Francis Grey all my land. In case of the failing of issues of Francis Grey then to be equally divided between my daughter Anne Rush the wife of William Rush and Ann Lancelott the daughter of John Lancelott.... My loving wife Alice Grey executrix." Francis Grey. Wittnesses: John Ashton, Mary Gardner. Proved: 31 July 1667 [227]
