Biography

Alice Tiler was baptized at Hitcham, Suffolk, 16 November 1585, daughter of John Tiler. She because the first wife of Thomas Sherwood by about 1611. They came from Kettle Baston, Suffolk to Massachusetts Bay in 1634 on the Francis of Ipswich (on 30 April 1634, "Thomas Sherwood," aged 48, "Alice his wife," aged 47, "Anna Sherwood," aged 14, "Rose Sherwood," aged 11, "Thomas Sherwood," aged 10, and "Rebecca Sherwood," aged 9, were enrolled at Ipswich as passengers for New England on the Francis of Ipswich).

They were settled at Wethersfield CT in 1635, and moved to Stamford CT by 1647, and to Fairfield in 1648. She died by about 1638.

They had eight children:

  • 1. Jane (probably m.),
  • 2. Mary (probably m.),
  • 3. Thomasine (perhaps m. William Belden),
  • 4. Sarah (probably did not m. Samuel Beardsley,
  • 5. Anna (probably m.),
  • 6. Rose Rumball Barlow Nash,
  • 7. Rebecca (probably m.), &
  • 8. Thomas.

This is a cenotaph. According to Peggy Mnich: Alice and her family moved to Wethersfield in 1635, and she died there in 1639. Thomas then moved to Stamford in 1640. Where he met and married Mary is unknown, but he married her circa 1640. They lived in Stamford until 1648, and then they moved to Fairfield until Thomas died in 1655. Or was Alice's remains moved to Fairfield?
