  • September 21, 1638 -- Sir Bassingbourne Throckmorton died at Norwich, Norfolk, England. His will was dated September 10 1638 and proved November 5 1638. A suit was brought by Lionel, Thomas, Miles and Robert Throckmorton and identifies John Throckmorton, his son who came to America in 1631 on the ship "Lyon". The full discussion can be found here. ELIZABETH CORNWALLIS, was born about 1522, and was named, with her husband, in her father's will. She was married to JOHN BLENNERHASSET, Esq., of Barsham, Suffolk, and Boyland Hall and Frenze, Norfolk, M.P. for Norwich, fourth son of Thomas Blennerhasset, Knt., of Frenze and Boyland Hall, Norfolk, by his second wife, Margaret, daughter of John Braham, Esq., of Wetheringsett, Suffolk. They had one daughter. He was married for the second time to Mary Echingham, second daughter and co-heiress of Edward Echingham, Kat., of Barsham, and had nine children. She was buried 20 Mar. 1571. JOHN BLENNERHASSET, ESQ., was buried at Barsham on 29 June 1573.

ELIZABETH BLENNERHASSET, was born about 1540. She was married at Barsham on 29 June 1561 to LIONEL THROCKMORTON, Gent., of South Elmham and Bungay, Suffolk, son of Simon Throckmorton, of Barsham, Suffolk, by Anne, daughter of Edmund Louthe, of Sawtry, co. Huntingdon. He was born in 1525, and had been married previously, without issue, to Elizabeth Kemp, daughter of Bartholomew Kemp, of Gissing, Norfolk. Lionel & Elizabeth had three sons and two daughters. He was founder of Bungay Grammar School.
LIONEL THROCKMORTON, GENT., died testate on 24 Nov. 1599 and was buried at Holy Trinity church, Bungay. The will of his widow was dated 30 June and proved 7 Nov. 1608.

BASSINGBOURNE THROCKMORTON, Esq., Grocer, Citizen, and Alderman of Norwich, was born in 1564. He was married for the first time in 1591 to MARY HILL, daughter of William Hill, Gent., of Bury St. Edmunds, by Joan, daughter of John Annabel, of Bury St. Edmunds. She died in 1615. He was married for the second time to HESTER PYE, daughter of Henry Pye, of Norwich, by his wife Susanna Sotheron, and had issue. BASSINGBOURNE THROCKMORTON, ESQ., died testate (P.C.C., 152 Lee) on 21 Sep. 1638. In litigation involving his estate in 1640 it could not be determined if his son John was dead or alive.

  • 20. BASSINGBOURNE THROCKMORTON, Esq., Grocer, Citizen, and Alderman of Norwich, Norfolk, 2nd son by his father's 2nd marriage, born in 1564. He married (1s) in 1591 MARY HILL, daughter of William Hill, Gent., of Bury S. Edmunds, by Joan, daughter of John Annabel, of Bury St. Edmunds. They had eight sons, Lionel, Thomas, John, Miles, Robert, George, Simon, and Lionel (again), and five daughters, Elizabeth, Mary, Ursula, Mary (again) (wife of William Rawley) and Elizabeth (again) (wife of John Layer). His wife, Mary, died in 1615. He married (2nd) HESTER PYE, daughter of Henry Pye, of Norwich, Norfolk, by his wife Susanna Sotherton. They had no issue.   • 21. JOHN THROCKMORTON, merchant and ship-owner, 3rd son by his father's 1s marriage, baptized at St. Paul's, Norwich, Norfolk 9 May 1601. He was apprenticed to a scrivener at Norwich, Norfolk 20 March 1620/ 1. He married REBECCA FARRAND, daughter of Richard Farrand, of Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex, by Rebeca Harrison. They had four sons, Freegift, John, Job, and Joseph, and two daughters, Patience (wife of John Coggeshall) and Deliverance (wife of James Ashton). He and his family immigrated to New England c. 1634, where they settled initially at Salem, Massachusetts. He was one of the original companions of Roger Williams in the settlement of Providence, Rhode Island in 1636. In 1642 he removed to New York; however, following the Indian uprising in the fall of 1643, he returned to Providence, Rhode Island, where he was Town Moderator, 1652, and Town Treasurer, 1677. He also served as Deputy in 1664-68, 1670-3, and 1675. His wife, Rebecca, was a legatee in the 1661 will of her sister, Elizabeth Farrand, spinster, of Halstead, Essex.
