About Benjamin Raphael

Benjamin Löw was previously identified as the son of Löw Benjamin , however it appears that "Benjamin Löw" of Weingarten was actually Benjamin son of Raphael Löw and at least two records refer to him as Benjamin Raphael. Those records are the 1813 marriage of his son, Salomon, which identifies Salomon's parents as Benjamin Raphael and Dora Kauffmann. Another is found in a governmental matter from 1774 concerning the necessary dowry for the first wife of Kaufmann Benjamin, where Kaufmann was identified as the "second son" of Benjamin Raphael. A property record from 1780 states that Kaufmann Benjamin is buying half of a house from his brother, Löw Benjamin, and that their common mother has the lifelong right to live there.

Additionally, in the Proceedings of the Palatine Privy Council (Generallandesarchiv Karlsruhe (GLAK) Bestand 61/9115), the entry from 13 February 1731 indicates "The Bretten district office reports about Raphael Löw applying for protection for his son Benjamin at Weingarten." GLAK 77/7257 has a listing of the Jews of Weingarten that indicates Benjamin Löw was given Schutz (protection) in 1731, a list from 1753 (GLAK 77/7269) shows that Benjamin was given Schutz on 28 March 1731, so only a few weeks after the February 1731 entry, which almost certainly means that they are the same person.

If Benjamin received Schutz in 1731, he would have been about 25 years old at that time, placing his birth in about 1705-1706. A Weingarten property record from about 1760 refers to "Jud Benjamin Wittib", meaning that he probably died in the late 1750s or 1760. Benjamin is also not mentioned in the Obergrombach cemetery records transcribed by Berthold Rosenthal, that being around 1760.
