Billy William, Sr. was the son of Rev. Calvin and Maria Sampson Lowry. At age 51, he married Flora Locklear on Dec. 25, 1911 in Pembroke, NC. Their marriage produced ten children. He was known affectionately as Uncle Billy, and at 100 years of age, became one of Pembroke's longest living residents.

The following was taken from the Oct. 7, 1954 edition of THE ROBESONIAN:

"Uncle Billy" Lowry was honored on his ninety-fourth birthday, when many of the people of Pembroke and nearly every member of his immediate family gathered on the grounds on his home, about one o'clock, Sunday, October 3. It is believed that "Uncle Billy" is Pembroke's oldest citizen.

Each year, the community takes a deeper interest in the occasion. Although ninety-four, he is still more active than many a person who is younger than he; he works still and says that there is truth in the old proverb: "Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise."

Neighbors report that he can be seen up and at work early in the day. He is still interested in farming and is seen frequently at church services in this and surrounding communitites.

"Uncle Billy" has no trouble getting around for friends are always willing to stop and give him a lift, if they see him afoot.

At the birthday celebration, the participants bring their own baskets for the picnic sprea, and with food for the group, bring presents for "Uncle Billy."

Mr. Lowry is the father of ten children, six girls and four boys, and a host of grand-children.
