Mariah was the youngest child of Rev. Calvin and Maria Sampson Lowry. She married Anderson Oxendine, Jr. on May 22, 1901 in Robeson county, North Carolina. Their marriage produced six daughters and three sons.

The following was taken from the Apr. 5, 1956 edition of THE ROBESONIAN:

The funeral of Mrs. Maria Lowry Oxendine, 73, widow of A. B. Oxendine, was held Wednesday afternoon at three o'clock from the New Prospect Methodist church. A nephew, Rev. J. R. Lowry, was in charge of the rites, assisted by Rev. Tommie Swett. Burial was in New Bethel cemetery.

Mrs. Oxedine died about 4:15 o'clock, Monday afternoon while being taken to the Robeson County Memorial Hospital, following a heart attack.

She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Raymond Ransome and Mrs. James R. Jacobs of Maxton, Mrs. William Ralph Chavis and Mrs. Henry Baker of Pembroke, and Mrs. James Bryant of Wilmington; three sons, Hubert and Vernon Oendine of Pembroke, and Rev. C. W. Oxendine of Maxton; three sisters, Mrs. Annie Belle Spaulding of Whiteville, Mrs. Deborah Woodell of Wilmington, Del., and Mrs. L. H. Revels of Pembroke; three brothers, Rev. F. R. Lowry, Rev. D. F. Lowry, and C. W. Lowry all of Pembroke. A fourth brother, Edmund Lowry, died Thursday morning.

Pallbearers were nephews Luther C. Oxendine, Elmer Lowry, Woodrow Lowry, Auzout Lowry, Theodore Lowry, and C. N. Lowry.

Flowers were in charge of nineteen nieces of the deceased. Music was furnished by a quartet from the Mt. Olivet Pentecostal Holiness church choir accompanied by Miss Maitland Woodell.
