About Capt. Jeremiah Beard Eells

He was a sea captain and enlisted as an ensign on 12 January 1776 in the 9th regiment of the Connecticut militia in Lt. John Carter's 9th Company when he was in his 40's. He was paroled in 1777 and after a time returned home. He also served at West Point, under Col. Canfield in 1781. He married first to Lois Benedict on 28 November 1754. He married second to Hannah Comstock. He and Lois had 13 children: John, Jeremiah, Anna, Lois, Martha, Sarah, Dinah, Samuel 1st, Samuel 2nd, Nathaniel, Beard, James Trowbridge, and Betsey. There are no known children of Jeremiah and his 2nd wife, Hannah.

He was an ardent patiot, who took up arms for his country at the beginning of the revolution and contunied in active serrvice during most of the conflict. He was soon promoted to a lieutenant of the Coast Gard, and while serving in this capacity he was captured by the Tories, March 14, 1777, and taken to New Lots, Long Island, a part of the present city of Brooklyn; where record of his is found under the date of Augst 11, 1778. His release took place Jan 31, 1779.

In spite of this harrowing experience he rejoined the army and in 1781 was at West Point, NY, serving as lieutenant under Col. Samuel Canfield.

Jeremiah Eells was a charter member of the Somerset Lodge, No 34, of the Free and Accepted Masons of Norwich, Conn. in 1795.
