Alexander Corrie was born at Gordieston Farm, Dumfries, Scotland on 8 July 1807. His parents, Robert Corrie and Sarah Brice, lived with their family, probably in a workers' cottage or barn annexe, at nearby McCubbington Farm, Dunscore on the River Nithe about 12km from Dumfries. It is likely Robert was a tenant farmer or 'portioner' or worked as a ploughman and shepherd. Sarah died when her son was just a fortnight old and Alexander is believed to have been brought up by his mother's parents, the Brices, at nearby Lochenhead Farm.
