William Symmes was born in January of 1627 and baptized in the Priory Church of St. Peter in Dunstable, Bedfordshire on January 10. He was the oldest son of Zachariah and Sarah Baker Symmes. When he was seven years old, the family came to New England and settled in Charlestown, Massachusetts, where his father became the minister of the First Church. William married Mary Sparhawk, the daughter of Nathaniel and Mary Sparhawk of Cambridge, about 1650. William and Mary had at least one child, a daughter named Sarah. They may have had more children. Mary died about 1674. William married again, Mary Chickering, and had more children. William died in Charlestown on September 22, 1691, his place of burial is unknown.
