About Charlotte Stock
Obituary
The death of Mrs Henry Stock removes another of the sturdy band of pioneers that came to North Otago from England in the early days prepared to overcome the obstacles that are always to be found in the path of those settling in a new land. It was as far back as 1858 that the late Mrs Stock, then a care-free child of four reached what is now Oamaru, in the ship "Nourmahal" with her parents, Mr and Mrs Robert Am[ie]s, who had come out under engagement to Mr Teschemaker, of Kauru Hill, whither the new arrivals wended their way on foot over the virgin, tussocky ground. The deceased was married to Mr Henry Stock at Kakanui in 1872 and during her 54 years of married life she has proved a loyal wife and a devoted mother. The young couple took up farming at Incholme where they built a sod house, the wife taking a prominent part in its erection. As a horsewoman she was unsurpassed and her skill as a rider won many prizes in the show ring. During the past 15 years the late Mrs Stock had lived in retirement in Oamaru, where she gained a host of friends who to-day mourn her demise. Of the three sons of the marriage the eldest, William, was killed during the South African war, while the other two, Messrs Albert and Arthur Stock are both resident of Oamaru. The only daughter is Mrs W. Cooper of Oamaru.
