About Clement Aldridge I

From Pam Wilson, Curator, in January 2014:

I have thoroughly searched the Worstead Parish Register with a fine-toothed comb to try to find a birth/baptism record for Clement from 1595-1610, but there is no sign of one. If he was the son of John and Agnes, he should have been baptized in Worstead along with their other children. This is puzzling to me and leads me to wonder if he was not their son but rather someone from another town who came to Worstead to marry (he married there in 1626). There are a couple of other Clement Aldrich's who could have been related--most notably one in North Walsham (neighboring village to Worstead) who was married to a Rose and had children named Clement, John and Elizabeth in the 1660's. There was also a Clement born 1571 in Kenton, Suffolk

Notes from Geoff Lowe's transcriptions of the Worstead Parish Burial Registers (I perused 1661-1715) online at http://www.genealogy.doun.org/transcriptions/documents.php?register...

An Alice Aldridge, wife of Clement, died in Worstead, England, in September 1668. What evidence do we have that she was the wife of Clement the younger rather than Clement the elder?

Also, an Elizabeth Aldrich, widow, died in Worstead in 1684. To whom was she married?

Some related family names:

Thomas Rolfe and John Rolph, both sons of Edward and Martha, died in 1688 in Worstead. John is also listed in 1689.

John Tills died in 1692. Edward Rolfe in 1697. Also Edward Rolfe in 1702. William Rolfe in 1708. Martha Rolfe in 1710.

There are some entries that may be mistranscribed that I need to check on. There is a name transcribed as Henry AUDYS buried in 1667; his wife and daughter, both named Anne, died in 1666.

Under the Birth record transcriptions, there is a Henry Harden, son of John and Margarett, born 1664. Henry AUDYS, son of Henry and Anne, born 1666. Elizabeth Aldridge, dau of Clement & Elizabeth, born 1669, with Mary Aldridge born in 1670.

Many other Harding children of John & Susannah over the following years. Many Stewards and Sothertons in Worstead, just to note. John Rolfe, son of Edward & Martha, born 1688. Also 1689. Mary Tills, dau of John & Anne, born 1690. 1691: John Tills, plus another Harding and Rolph. 1692: Elizabeth Tills, dau of John & Anne. I stopped at 1700.

Marriages (start with 1662 here): 1668: ALDRIDGE, Clement TI..?, Elizabeth. 1669: ELDRIDGE, Joseph GOODALL, Jane. 1673: PYCROFT, Samuell ALDERED?, Alice.

Pam Wilson's research notes:

Clement Aldrich/Aldridge and Susan Boswell were apparently immigrants to Northumberland Co, Virginia. However, I have not yet found any record of their immigration in the form of ship lists or of patents given for their transport.

The Northumberland County Record Book 1666-1670 (p 100) includes a grant from Sir WILLIAM BERKELEY unto ABRAHAM JOYCE and RICH: THOMPSON of 200 acres of land in ye county of Northumberland, bounding upon the land of THOM. ADAMS and PHIL: CARPENTER & upon ye land of HEN: ROACH and upon ye land of GEO: COURTNEY & WALTER WEEKES, beginning at a marked corner red Oake and running southerly 320 pole and westerly 100 pole, Northerly 320 pole and Easterly to ye place where it firtst began; ye sd land being due to sd JOYCE & THOMPSON by & for ye transportacon of fower (4) persons into this colony whose names are on ye records menconed underneath this patent...the 7th day of March 1666. WILLIAM BERKELEY

Know all men by these presents yt I ABRAHAM JOYCE doe assigne all my right & interest of ye withing mentioned patent to CLEMENT ALDERIDGE his heirs and assignes for ever. Wit: JOHN ROBERTS, RICH: ROBERTS, sign ABRAHAM JOYCE. Recognized and recorded 20th 9ber 1666.

This raises many questions--who were the 4 persons Joyce transported--did they include Clement and Susan? And why did he deed his patent over to Clement?

There is also confusion in the Northumberland Co, VA records about *which* Clement was involved in certain transactions, since there were several generations of Clement Aldridge/Arledges.

The following is excerpted from an email to Clay Fulcher from Carolyn Jett, on January 13, 1997: "Clement Aldridge/Arledge was in Northumberland by 2 Apr. 1667, which was when he witnessed the will of the Reverend David Lyndsay. He was a neighbor of Lyndsay, whose gravestone (or half of it) is still there. That gives us the general location of Aldridge/Arledge's land, in the area known as Cherry Point Neck. On 20 9ber [November] of probably 1666 or 1667, Clement purchased 100 acres of land. Nearby was another tract of 100 acres belonging to Cloud [Claudius] Tullos. It is possible that this Clement Aldridge was the same man who married Elizabeth Tilles at Worstead, Norfolk, England in 1668. If so, he must have returned to England to marry her, for he was here before that date."

Was the land purchase of 100 acres that Jett mentions separate from the land that Abraham Joyce deeded to him that same date (20th 9ber 1666), or is Jett referring to the same piece of land and transaction?

The will in questionin Jett's note is that of DAVID LYNDSAY, Minister of God, who bequeathed his estate to his daughter HELEN LYNDSAY, who he also named his Executrix. Will written 2 April 1667, Signed in presence of JAMES CLAYTON, ye mrke of CLE:MT ARLIDGE and GEORGE DEACON. Proved 8 April 1667 by ye oathes of JAMES CLAUGHTIN & CLEM: ARLIDGE. Northumberland County Court Records.

It is most likely that these early records were for the elder Clement.
