About Daniel Bacon, I

Born in Winston, Suffolk, England in 1615, Daniel came to America in 1640 with his father to Dedham, Massachusetts. He and Mary Reed were probably married about 1639/1640 in Colchester, Essex County, England.

Daniel was one of the signers of the Woburn orders on Dec.18, 1640. He was made a freeman on May 26, 1647, was granted land in Woburn in 1648 and was on the 1655 tax list.

Daniel and Mary had the following children:

  • 1. Daniel II 1641-1719, m. Susanna Spencer
  • 2. Thomas 1645-1701, m. May
  • 3. John 1647-1723, m. Abigail
  • 4. Hannah 1649-1711
  • 5. Isaac 1650-1684, m. Abigail
  • 6. Rachel 1652-1717, m. Thomas Pierce
  • 7. Jacob 1654-1709, m. Elizabeth Knight 1656-1713
  • 8. Lydia 1656-1717, m. Samuel Pierce

By Oct 9, 1665, Daniel was granted land in Bridgewater. He was on a jury to lay out highways in Bridgewater in 1664, and in 1666 was elected constable there. In 1668, Daniel Bacon “of Bridgewater,” a tailor, purchased land in Cambridge.

In Cambridge, he was made surveyor of highways in 1669 and constable in 1672. As constable, he signed a petition for the church to contribute to the care of Joseph Bartlett and his family who were “pore and in lowe condtion.” In 1670, Daniel exchanged his land in Bridgewater with his nephew Michael for Michael’s property in Woburn. Daniel died in Newton (Cambridge) 07 Sep 1691.
