Daniel Shuster

Daniel Shuster came to America at the age of 14 in 1766 and settled in Washington Cty, PA, which was then in the "far west". Here he grew to manhood, married, and moved to Ohio. On the same ship on which Daniel came to America was a young woman named Margaret Shuster. These two were not directly related, although they bore the same family name. Possibly, they were cousins. On their arrival in America, their "time" was sold to the same man to pay for their passage on the ship. After they were freed, having worked out the cost of their ship fare, they married in Washington Cty, PA.

Daniel Shuster served as a private in Captain James Wright's Company of Youghegenia Militia in actual service for the month of Sep, 1778, commanded by Colonel John Stevenson, Westmoreland Cty, and in Captain George Sharp's Company, Washington County Militia, 1782-1785. For saving the life of his commanding officer, Daniel was cited for meritorious conduct. He was awarded a medal by the Government and twelve quarter-sections of land in Ohio, with the privilege of choosing these quarter-sections from lands not already deeded to someone else. On his death, Daniel deeded one quarter-section to each of his ten living children.

Danial and Margaret were buried in a private cemetery between Sherrodsville and New Cumberland. Their remains were transferred to the New Cumberland cemetery in 1932, through the generosity and interest of Joseph Opp, a great-grandson, of Forest, OH. The old tombstone can be seen in the north portion of the New Cumberland cemetery.
