Descendants of David Dalton, Sr.

DAVID DALTON, SR. was born Bet. 1730 - 1735 and lived in Albemarle Co. Va. before 1763, and died Abt. 1804 in Rutherford County, North Carolina. He married UNKNOWN.

From: Magazine of VA Genealogy, Vol. 23 No. 1 David Sr., is believed to be the immigrant on this line from England. He and his sons fought in the Revolution and three sons are known to have received pensions. He lived in Albemarle County, VA before 1763; According to the pension applications of John and William they joined the army from Albemarle County, VA. Subsequently the family removed to Burke County, NC, where they were in constant conflict with the British and Indians. Because of the heavy fighting, David decided to send his wife and daughters, along with his youngest son, Thomas to Rutherford County, NC, where the children's uncle, William lived. Thomas found the area a hotbed of Tory support, and became a spy for the Patriots. By 1782, the family had reassembled in the Mountain Creek area of Rutherford County. David, Sr. is found on the tax list for that year. In 1786 he bought 70 acres on the North Fork of Broad River from a Thomas Morris.

He is the only Dalton listed on the 1782 Rutherford Co., NC Tax index. June 6, 1804, Thomas & John Dalton sold land in Rutherford Co., NC as administrators of his estate.

1800 Census Rutherford Co., NC, list David Dalton as Head of household with:

  • 1 male 0-10 years old
  • 2 males 10-16
  • 1 male 16- 26
  • 1 male 45 yrs and older
  • 1 female 0-10 years old
  • 1 female 10-16
  • 1 female 16-26
  • 1 female 45 yrs and older

David Dalton lived 1782 in the Mountain Creek area of Rutherford County, N.C. In 1786 he bought 70 acres on the North Fork of Broad River from Thomas Morris. On June 6, 1804 his sons John and Thomas, as administrators, sold for $425 his 75 acres on both sides of the North Fork of main Broad River, Michael Muckleworth patent. This is also land which had belonged to Thomas Morris, thus it appears he bought a total of 145 acres from Thomas Morris.

There were two David Daltons in Albemarle County, Virginia in 1782:

1. The first David Dalton was accounted for in district 1. He was tithed (Taxed) for himself, 2 cows, and 1 horse. John Dalton was in the same district, and also accounted for in this district.

2. The second David Dalton was accounted for in District 2 with William Dalton. He was tithed for himself, 7 slaves, 26 cows and 7 horses.

It appears that the first David Dalton lived on the East side of of the North Fork of the Rivanna River and the second David Dalton, lived on the West side of the North Fork of the Rivanna River. The David Dalton that went to Stokes County, NC had several slaves but the David Dalton that went to Rutherford County, NC had no slaves.

Children of DAVID DALTON and UNKNOWN WIFE are:

  1. WILLIAM DALTON, b. Abt. 1754, Albemarle County, Virginia; d. Abt. 1852, Henderson County, North Carolina.
  2. BRADLEY DALTON, b. Abt. 1755, Albemarle County, Virginia.
  3. JOHN DALTON, b. October 03, 1758, Albemarle County, Virginia; d. September 15, 1838, Bledsoe County, Tennessee.
  4. DAVID DALTON, b. Abt. 1760, Albemarle County, Virginia; d. Abt. 1835, Henderson County, North Carolina.
  5. THOMAS DALTON, b. 1763, Albemarle County, Virginia; d. February 19, 1841, Rutherford County, North Carolina.
  6. LUCY ELIZABETH DALTON, b. Abt. 1765, Albemarle County, Virginia; d. March 1850.

Abt. 1771; d. Abt. 1835. Notes for WILLIAM SEARCY: William Searcy married Frances Dalton , Oct. 19, 1790 in Rutherford Co. N.C. The 1800 Census for Rutherford Co. N.C. shows this family with 3 boys and 1 girl under 10 years. He bought 100 acres of land from his Brother-in-law, Rev. John Dalton on Sept. 2, 1808.

Neither the exact date or place of birth of David Dalton Sr is known. His date of birth here is based on the earliest recorded fact found to date that could be used to determine age according to Virginia law. He would have been of age in 1746 when he was sued for debt in Brunswick County, VA. (Brunswick Co VA COB 3:63). DNA tests of descendants indicate he was Irish.

By 1776 he is referenced in John Smith's Last Will & Testament as living on land across from Owen Atkinson (Pittsylvania County, VA, Will Book). The 1774 Atkinson survey of 80 acres in the watershed of Bearskin Creek would today be south of Route 799 and off to the West. The exact boundaries are unknown.

David Dalton Sr. signed the Oath of Allegiance on Captain Daniel Hankins' list in Pittsylvania County, VA, in 1777. This makes descendants eligible for membership in the Daughters and Sons of the American Revolution.

Little is known about the married life of David Dalton Sr., except that he was married to Hannah (family unknown). From 1797 through 1801, Camden Parish Vestry provided support for David and Hannah. From 1802 through 1804 support was provided for Hannah only; therefore, we can assume David Dalton was deceased by 1802 and Hannah Dalton was deceased by 1804.

David Dalton Sr's Children:

1. BENJAMIN: born c1751. On tithe with David paying tithe, 1767. Witnesses deed in Bedford, 1768. Disappears.

2. JAMES: born c1757. On tithe list as son of David, 1773. Signed Oath of Allegiance 1777. May lease first land, 1778. Married AGNES DYER, 1782. Moved to Bearskin Creek, 1786. Probably died 1802 (based on tax lists and a James Dalton listed as deceased in COB 10: 310.).

3. RACHEL: born 1759. Married GEORGE DYER, 1775. Moved to Henry County, VA. Died Henry County, VA, 1862.

4. SARAH: Born c1760. Married Daniel McKenzie prior to 1787. Moved to Henry County, VA, where her husband died. Moved to Pulaski County, KY, with her children and the Bobbitt family.

5. NANCY: Born c1760. Married Nathan Dyer, 1788. [NOTE: Not proven as a child of David Dalton, Sr.]

Not to be confused with the other Virginia Rev War David Dalton who died in Pittsylvania County, VA, in 1802.

10-26-23 thanks to Dalton researcher James 49477057 for info:

I believe Hannah is not this David's wife. This David's 1800 census appears to become Elizabeth Dalton's in 1810. So it appears this David's wife at death may have been Elizabeth rather than Hannah. The current death date for Hannah is 1770, so he may have had a wife by the name of Hannah. If so, I do not believe she was a Goad/Goode. This David never passed through Pittsylvania County according to his son's Revolutionary War pension applications (Thomas W6983 http://revwarapps.org/w6983.pdf ; and John S1755 http://revwarapps.org/s1755.pdf). Both applications say they were born in Albemarle County VA and traveled to Rutherford County (John mentioning a stop in Burke County NC). The Goads never passed through Albemarle, going from the Rappahannock basin directly to Southside VA. Pittsylvania David did marry a Hannah, but she died in 1804. His Hannah is rumored to be a Goad, but there is reason to doubt that. I will add that John's pension application cited above says his uncle is William Grant, which may suggest this David's wife was Elizabeth Grant.

Also, this David's parents MAY not be Timothy and Elizabeth. We have Y-DNA for many of the Rutherford Daltons which shows they are not closely related to the Pittsylvania Daltons. We are not certain we have Y-DNA from Timothy (d. 1767) and Elizabeth of Louisa County, but if we do they are not closely related to Rutherford David.

The children linked appear correct with the exception of Rachel (Dalton) Dyer who belongs to Pittsylvania David.
