About David Purviance, II
James Purviance was born after the death of his father, David Purviance (1708-1743), who is said to have been killed by Indians; his mother, Margaret McKnight Purviance (1712-1743) died at his birth. His parents' faith is unknown but probably Presbyterian as that was the faith of his siblings. After the death of his parents, his siblings were raised by his father's brother John (1712-1749) & his wife another Margaret McKnight (1717-1760), but he was raised by a Quaker family and also practiced the Quaker faith. It does seem odd that he was given the same name as his older sibling, but he may have been named by his adoptive parents who may have not known his brother was named James.
Purviance (French: Purvaiance or de Purvaiance) Huguenots escaped up to Ireland after revocation of the toleration for Protestants that had been granted in the Edict of Nantes.
