DIEGO DE MONTEMAYOR

Sobre la vida de Diego de Montemayor antes de la conquista se sabe en realidad muy poco. Se ignora el lugar de su nacimiento así como las primeras actividades que desarrolló en la Nueva España.

Se sabe que en 1572 era vecino de las minas de Mazapil. Su segunda esposa se llamó Juana de la Cerda (o Porcallo). Hija de ambos fue Estefanía, mujer de Alberto del Canto, fundador de Saltillo, Coahuila. Su primera esposa, madre de Diego Montemayor -El Mozo-, fue doña María de Orive.

Es probable que Diego de Montemayor haya pisado por primera vez el territorio norte como integrante de la expedición del general Urdiñola, ya que su nombre aparece en los registros de los primeros pobladores de la ciudad de Saltillo.

Tampoco se tiene por seguro si llegó a lo que él mismo fundaría después como Ciudad Metropolitana de Nuestra Señora de Monterrey con las primeras expediciones de Alberto del Canto o con la misión de Luis Carvajal y de la Cueva.

Lo cierto es que en 1596 volvió a lo que Carvajal había nombrado Villa de San Luis y ahí fundó la ciudad de Monterrey

Se sabe que murió a avanzada edad. Algunos historiadores aseguran que murió en 1610 y otros que murió en 1612, año en que se vivió en la ciudad una de las peores inundaciones de la historia.

Governor Diego de MONTEMAYOR765,2557 was born about 1528 in Malaga, Spain. He was elected as Governor of Nuevo Leon on 5 April 1588 in Villa de Leon, Nuevo Leon, New Spain.2558 He died about 1610 at the age of 82 in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, New Spain. Diego de Montemayor murdered his wife, Juana Porcayo de la Cerda, after discovering that she had been having carnal relations with Alberto del Canto. This was the same Alberto del Canto who later married his daughter Estefania. In 1596, Diego de Montemayor led a group of 15 families from Saltillo and settled in the area of El Cerro de la Silla. This was the third attempt by Spaniards to settle the area but this time it was successful. The site became the city of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon. Parents: Juan MONTEMAYOR and Mayor HERNANDEZ.

The charter of the Metropolitan City of Our Lady of Monterrey, is dated September 20, 1596, issued by the Captain Diego de Montemayor (founder of it), and signed by the clerk Diego Díaz de Berlanga.This important document that supports its validity in the Ordinances for the founding of towns, villages and cities in the territory of Spanish rule, tells the location of these royal lands, and establishes the creation of a council to govern the new city. The transcript is from the Book Volume 1 Proceedings of City Council, as the original document is not within the Acquis. It presents the image of the document that contains a copy of the letter made original founding in 1638 by the notary Juan de Abrego. In the name of God Almighty and the glorious and blessed Mary ever Virgin, Mother of God and Our Lady. This public instrument know how many founding charter [Vieren] how I, Diego de Montemayor treasurer of the Exchequer of the New Kingdom of León, lieutenant governor and captain-general for the rebuilding of it by the king our lord, mindful of the causes and the reasons people gave for coming to this valley of Extremadura and kingdom for its population and pacification of the natives of him, El apellido se le debe a Diego de Montemayor, fundador del linaje norteño, cuyos datos permanecen en el Archivo General de Indias, sección de la Casa de Contratación de Sevilla (aduana internacional de España en el siglo XVI). Encontramos que Diego de Montemayor era vecino de Málaga (Andalucía) y que era hijo de Juan de Montemayor y de Mayor Hernández. En primeras nupcias estaba casado con Inés Rodríguez, y ambos pasaron a la Nueva España según registros del 7 de diciembre de 1548. Diego se casó otras dos veces, su segunda esposa fue María de Esquivel, y la tercera, Juana Porcallo y de la Cerda.

Diego fue Alcalde Mayor de Saltillo en 1580. El 5 de abril de 1588 fue nombrado Tesorero de la Real Hacienda y teniente de gobernador y de capitán general desde los ojos de Santa Lucía (Monterrey) hasta Parras y lo demás que había hasta el río Grande y hasta la Laguna. Este nombramiento lo constituyó (al menos nominalmente) en una de las primeras autoridades laguneras. Hay que recordar que en esa época surgió un conflicto de límites entre el Nuevo Reino de León y el Reino de la Nueva Vizcaya. Diego fue Alcalde Ordinario de Saltillo en 1591, y escribano de ahí mismo en 1593. En 1596 Diego de Montemayor organizó a doce familias de Saltillo para ir a fundar Monterrey, lo cual llevó a cabo. Se le reconoce como fundador de Monterrey, tras la fallida población realizada por Luis de Carvajal y de la Cueva.

Estefanía de Montemayor y Porcallo, hija del tercer matrimonio de Diego, se casó con Alberto del Canto, fundador de Saltillo en 1577.

Por su parte, la familia del Canto tenía un remoto origen medieval, pues procedía de María do Canto, casada con Joao Fernandes de Souto Mayor a finales del siglo XIV y principios del XV. Los tratadistas portugueses mencionan que originalmente este apellido era do Kent y que procedía de Inglaterra. Pero lo cierto es que los Do Canto se habían establecido en Guimarães, en Portugal. Alberto del Canto era re tataranieto de María do Canto, y su tío paterno, Pedro Anes do Canto, nacido hacia 1470, era proveedor de las Reales Armadas Portuguesas. Fue tanto el prestigio de los del Canto, que el obispo de Malaca los celebró en verso. Alberto nació en la villa de Praia, en la isla Terceira, en las Azores, y era hijo de Sebastiao Martins do Canto y de María Dias Vieira, consanguínea del bienaventurado Juan Bautista Machado, mártir jesuita en Japón (1617).

Alberto del Canto y Estefanía de Montemayor tuvieron varios hijos, entre los cuales mencionamos a Miguel de Montemayor. Es de notar que los descendientes de este matrimonio pusieron en primer lugar el apellido Montemayor, en parte porque los problemas políticos entre Portugal y la España de Felipe II de finales del siglo XVI, lo ameritaba. Por otra parte, en su época tenía mayor rango político Diego de Montemayor que Alberto del Canto.

Muchos Montemayores descienden de Miguel. Y por línea femenina, sus descendientes perdieron, no la sangre, sino el apellido original, y llevan muchos otros apellidos saltillenses y regiomontanos igualmente ilustres, como Garza, de la Garza, de la Garza Falcón, González, de la Fuente, etc. Estos son apellidos muy comunes en Torreón, ciudad poblada con innumerables inmigrantes mexicanos y extranjeros.
