C.W. Tazewell (1917- ), Copyright 1990 by C.W. Tazewell, W.S. DawsonCounty; Publisher According to the Genealogist, R. M. Conway, he came to Virginiaabout1635, locating in New Kent County. He brought with him a sealbearingthearms of "Waller of Kent." He received a grant for 126 acresin Gloucester County, dated February 20th, 1667. Together with hisbrother,WilliamWaller, and Gerard Martin he received another grantfor 800 acres inStafford County, dated July 2md, 1669. He marriedMary Kay or Key. Hisnewhome built in Virginia was named "Newport"(Pagnell) for the old placein England. The register of Newport Pagnell, Bucks, England, contains the birthsof the following children of Doctor John Waller and Mary his wife:(1)William, born Sept. 24, 1671; (2) John, born Feb. 23, 1673; (3)Mary,born May 23, 1674; (4) Thomas, born Oct. 17, 1675; (5) Steven, born Nov. 24, 1676; (6) Benjamin, born March 18, 1678; (7) Edmund, born Feb.3, 1680; (8) Jemima, born Aug. 31, 1684. (See William andMary Quarterly, IX. 63). Of these sons, Edmund, M.D. was a seniorfellow of St. Johns College, Cambridge, and John is supposed ot havebeen the emigrantto Virginia.

Virginia Magazine of History and Biography Vol. 59 No. 3 (July 1951)THE POET writes of the happy return of Charles the Second. Hammersresound with the restoration of churches throughout the width andbreadthof the land. This England, tired of long years of curfewednights, tired of wineless dinners, tired of puritanical living, welcomed back thegay and gallant Charles the Second and went aboutwith alacrity to wipe from their lives all trace of Cromwell.England's colonies changed governors and the great upper middle classgave more thought to these colonies, a rich source of revenue andexpanseless territory for the settlement of young colonists. Yea! Moreand more thought was givento America. This was England; and her shipsplying the seven seas over which she was undisputed mistress. Lying inthe south-centre of this landis Buckinghamshire; adjoining London andbounded on the south by the river Thames. Drained by the Ouse, nearthe centre of this shrine, referred to as Bucks, lay the Hundred ofNewport. Pagnell is nearly in thecentre of the Hundred and thus in theheart of England. The great roadto Liverpoolpasses through Pagnelland is in some parts dead flatwithhedgerows on either side; thoughoccasional glimpses of the surrounding country-sidemay be had and achurch spire appears between greatbranches of Englishoak. The Churchof Walton parish, dedicated to St. Michael, was already an oldedifice, irregular and consisting of asquaretower, a nave andchancelwhen our story begins. The low ground on which the church stands inthis flat country-side causes it to be excessively damp, giving it asombre air. So we find Walton, Bucks,England, in 1669. On a winterdayofthat year - January 13, tobe exact - came John Waller and MistressMary Pomfrett to Walton, to be married. OfMary Pomfrett little isknown. We learn that William PromfrettA.B. was vicar of Astwood, May27, 1689 through December 21, 1704; and thatMr. Benjamin Pomfrett, ofNewport Pagnell, purchased of Sir William Tyreyham, Knt., the right ofadvowson; while later, RobertPomfrett was rectorof Emberton from April30, 1753 until 1804. Apparently John Waller andhis wife resided inNewport Pagnell for in the registerof thatparish we find the births oftheir numerous children recorded. The family of Waller is one of themost ancient and distinguished among English ancestry. There is anunbroken male linefrom William theConqueror's time down to thepresent time. An English genealogist claims to have tracedthe nameback to the sixth century. The English speaking branch oftheWaller'swas founded by two brothers, John Henry David de Waller and Alfred deWaller, Norman's, who came intoEngland with William theConqueror theyear 1066 and fought with him atHastings. John Henry David Waller wasgiven lands in Nottingham County;Alfredin the County of Kent.TheAmerican Branch traces descent fromAlfred de Waller,of Kent, who diedin 1083 (Domesday Book)

Patricia Watkins-Schmidt - Oct 24, 2001 John Waller is a descendent of William 1 the Lion, King of Scotland I have also read that in "Dr. John Wallers Will", probated inEngland after his death does show the sums and properties left to hischildren including our Mary Waller that his son John Waller receivedlittleas Dr. Waller had already provided his son with monies to cometo Virginia and buy the land that he did. Now, I go with his will that Dr. John Waller married to MaryPomfrettdied in England as that is where his will was probated.

Oddly enough, my husband and I were visiting Bellfield Plantationtheday after Christmas and discovered an underground burial vault. This vault was not previously known about. The Bellfield Plantationis onNavyProperty, but leased by the National Park Service. This isimportantbecause the Navy is responsible for the follow through.Navy Archeologist have been to Bellfield and have tentatively datedthe casket to thelate 1700's to mid 1800's and feel it is a Diggesfamily member, female or a child due to the size. The body isenclosed in a cast iron casket which meant the individual was ofprominence. I do have picturesofthe vault, but can not send themto you at this time due to security concerns by the Navy. They areprotecting the vault and fear looting may take place. I will keepyou updated on this situation if you like. I do have a picture ofEdward Digges Crypt that is located on Bellfield Plantation if youlike. The Plantation is now closed to the public.

"John Waller was apprenticed 23 Jun 1658 to the Barber SurgeonsCompany; was admitted to Freedom 06 Feb 1665; admitted to StCatherine's College, Cambridge 10 Jun 1664 M. B. 1667; Married atWalton, Bucks, Eng13 Jan 1669 to Mary Pomfrett of Newport Pagnell,Bucks. One of the functions of the Barber Surgeons' Company in the17th century was closelyanalogous to that of a medical school oftoday. After nearly seven years training there John Waller was amaster surgeon. Before achieving his freedom (somewhat similiar tosaying, before he was admitted topractice) heentered St. Catherine'sCollege, Cambridge, and after three years therehe received hisdegree, which in the record is printedas the M. B. which seems to beerroneous to M.D. degree being probably intended. The Cambridge Alumnidirectory incorrectly states that the father of this John was JohnWaller , a clothier, of Braintree, Numerous errors are containedtherein as to relationships, Mr. Glencross himselfis mentioned thereinas calling attention to certain of them. Nearly all the writers on thesubject of Waller genealogy have agreed that Colonel John Waller, whowas of 'Enfield' King William County Virginia, andlater of'Newport' inSpotsylvania, was the son of Dr. John Waller, of NewportPagnell,Bucks, Eng. They are, moreover, completely justified in making thisassumption since the arms on his tombstone are identical with thosewhich Dr. John Waller, of Newport Pagnell, Bore, and his Spotsylvaniaplantation was doubtless named "Newport" in memory of the place of hisbirth in England. They have usually, however, stated that Dr. JohnWaller's wife was Mary KEY or Kay). concerning that Mr. Glencross haswritten: 'With regard to Dr. John Waller who, you say , married Mary Key, Ihave found no such marriage.'

Dr John Waller's will was probated in 1723 in the prerogative Court ofCanterbury: In it he refers to his eldest daughter Mary, and son John,as being then in Virginia, Dr John's widow Mary (Pomfrett) cametoVirginia, for as early as 03 Nov 1724 she made her home with eitherher son, Colonel John Waller or her daughter, Mary (Waller) Herndon.'"

John WALLER M.D. was born about 1645 at Newport Pagnall, Buckinghamshire, England and wrote his will there on 21d 8m 1716. The parish records there do not show a baptismal or a burial record for him. He is sometimes confused with his son John the Colonel. Note however that while the Colonel emmigrated to Virginia the M.D. did not.

JOHN WALLER, Gent., of unknown parentage. He was admitted sizer at St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge University June 10, 1664, and obtained a Bachelor of Medicine degree in 1667. He married at Walton, Buckinghamshire 13 Jan. 1669 MARY POMFRETT. They had nine sons, Leonard, [Rev.] William, [Col.] John, Thomas, Stephen, Benjamin, [Dr.] Edmund, M.D., James, and James (again), and two daughters, Mary and Jemima. In 1697 Anthony Chibnall, of Sherington, Gent., and his son and heir, John Chibnall, of Sherington gave a mortgage bond to John Waller, of Newport Pagnell, Gent. As “John Waller, Gent.,” he presented his son, William Waller, A.M. to the rectory of Walton, Buckinghamshire 23 June 1711. Some family trees show these dates: Dr. John Waller Birth: 1645 Newport Pagnell Milton Keynes Borough Buckinghamshire, England Death: Aug. 21, 1716 (?) Newport Pagnell Milton Keynes Borough Buckinghamshire, England

Headstones have not been located. Some were removed from the cemetery and used to make a walk in approximately the 1960s. One website has a list of the stones which were removed but the list does not include the Wallers. John Waller's will refers to the family plot inside an enclosure by the river wall. Note that the river overflows in that area, so there may have been no readable markers left when the stones were removed.John WALLER M.D. was born about 1645 at Newport Pagnall, Buckinghamshire, England and wrote his will there on 21d 8m 1716. The parish records there do not show a baptismal or a burial record for him. He is sometimes confused with his son John the Colonel. Note however that while the Colonel emmigrated to Virginia the M.D. did not.
