About Edward Barnes, of Edgecombe County

Edward Barnes was born between 1680/1685 or 1691 in Isle Of Wight County, Virginia, and died BEF MAR 1762 in Edgecombe County, NC. He married Sarah Pope on ABT 1707.

Biography

Edward [Barnes, of Edgecombe County] was the ancestor of most of the Barneses in this area. He was in North Carolina by 1722 and had patented over 2000 acres of land within six years. He might be described as a pretty substantial planter. He was in Northampton County in 1742 but had moved to Edgecombe County by 1747, where he patented 479 acres north of Tosneot Swamp and adjoining John Thomas, Sr., in 1752 and 1753. Edward died early in 1762 leaving a will, wife Sarah (by birth a Pope, it is said), and children Nathan, William, Jacob, Abraham, Mourning Fiveash, Charity Simms (married James Simms), Mary Simms (married Robert Simms of Wayne County) Elizabeth Leigh, Sarah Amson, and Patience. A son named Joseph had already died testate in Northampton County in 1751, leaving wife Elizabeth (Whitley by birth) and children Jacob, Michael, Dempsey, Jethro and James.

Jethro Barnes died near Whiteoak Swamp in 1815, in what is now Wilson Countyh, leaving 1,125 acres of land and seven children: Sally Parish, Eliza Marchman, Jesse, Enos, William, Jethro, Jr. and Michael. Dempsey Barnes settled by 1771 south of Tosneot Swamp and near the present Nash County line and accumulated about 1, 000 acres of land and four slaves. His will probated in 1807 indicates that he was a rather prosperous planter and mentioned wife Sarah (said to have been a Dew) and children Joseph, Jesse, Thomas, James, John, Susannah Daniel, Polly, Elizabeth Applewhite and Sarah Blackburn.

Origins

Parents seen as son of James Barnes, of Isle of Wight County & Sarah Barnes.

You should also be aware that it has been shown fairly conclusively that Edward Barnes (will devised December 5, 1761, Proven March, 1762; md. Sarah Pope) of Edgecombe County, NC was NOT the son of James Barnes (will devised March 2, 1719/20, Proven October, 1720) of Isle of Wight County, VA. Researcher Margaret Van Ness Nelson published a well documented article making the case that James' son Edward was actually the Edward Barnes who devised his will in Southampton County, Virginia on July 15, 1761 (Proven March 11, 1762). These two Edward Barneses were different men.See, "Which Edward Barnes was the son of James Barnes, Isle of Wight County, Virginia?" by Margaret Van Ness Nelson, published in "Trees of Wilson: The Newsletter of the Wilson County Genealogical Society", March, 2000, Volume 9, Number 3, pages 4-7.

Edward Barnes (d. 1762) of Edgecombe County, NC's connection to the Barnes family of Isle of Wight and Southampton Counties, VA isn't entirely clear, though he definitely had origins in that area. The Southampton County, VA will of John Pope (Devised February 1, 1748, Proven July 14, 1751) mentioned a daughter Sarah Barnes; and the will of Elizabeth Pope, sister of Sarah (Pope) Barnes, left a bequest to "Elizabeth Barnes, daughter of Edward Barnes of North Carolina" (Devised July 12, 1757, Proven August 11, 1757 Southampton County, VA).

Son of Jacob Barnes according to
http://www.williambarnesgenealogy.com/barnes_families/Jacob_Barnes_...

1680/1685 Edward Barnes, who married Sarah Pope, was born. This Edward Barnes appears to be the son of this Jacob Barnes of Isle of Wight Co., VA, because Jacob Barnes was a member of the same Quaker meeting as Sarah Pope, and he witnessed the will of William Frizzell, which mentions Frizzell’s granddaughter, Susan Pope—the sister or half-sister of Sarah Pope. (Edward died in 1762 in Edgecombe Co., NC.)

Jacob Barnes was associated with Quaker families, including the Popes - this Edward’s wife’s family.
