"Which Edward Barnes Was The Son of James, Isle of Wight County, Virginia?" a 3-page article on page 28 of a 140-page book comparing Edward Barnes b: between 1680-1691 and Edward Barnes and brother Thomas, both born after 1706 to James Barnes (1668-1719). There is no mention in the article of Edward Barnes (1691-1760) and father James Barnes (1652-1719). < PDF >; (document attached). The will for Edward Barnes of Southhampton Co, dated 15 Jul 1761, proven 11 Mar 1762, names wife Elizabeth, sons Jacob, Joshua, James, Burwell, and daughters Mary Barrett, Priscilla, Elizabeth, and Martha.

To son Jacob Barns one bed and furniture, one cow and calf.
To son Joshua Barnes all of a survey of land lying on the west side of
the Cyprus Road adj. lands of Wm Fowler and Jacob Barnes.
To son Joshua one bed and furniture and one cow and calf.
To son James Barnes the lands and plantation whereon I now live as far
as a line of markt trees crossing the said land from the side line to
the Cyprus Swamp.
To son James (and his heirs and assignees forever, as with others) one
cow and calf
To son Burwell Barns (heir and assignees forever, etc.) all that part
of the tract or parcel of land that lies on the Cyprus Swamp above the
Cross line having already given the lower part to my son James.
To son Burwell one gun and bayonet, and one cow and calf
To dau Mary Barrett one cow and calf
To dau Priscilla Barnes one pewter bason

James Barnes made no name for himself but at least managed to acquire two plantations that he willed in 1720 to his sons Edward and Thomas. The maiden name of his wife Sarah has not yet been determined. [Referring to James Barnes, of Isle of Wight County, Sarah Barnes, and his sons Edward Barnes, of Southampton County & Thomas Barnes, of Southampton County - who was NOT this Edward Barnes, of Edgecombe County].

You should also be aware that it has been shown fairly conclusively that Edward Barnes (will devised December 5, 1761, Proven March, 1762; md. Sarah Pope) of Edgecombe County, NC was NOT the son of James Barnes (will devised March 2, 1719/20, Proven October, 1720) of Isle of Wight County, VA. Researcher Margaret Van Ness Nelson published a well documented article making the case that James' son Edward was actually the Edward Barnes who devised his will in Southampton County, Virginia on July 15, 1761 (Proven March 11, 1762).
