About Elias Horry, "the Immigrant"
Elias Horry was born in 1664 in Paris, France. He died on September 25, 1736 in South Carolina and was buried in the Huguenot Church Cemetery, Charleston, South Carolina.
After the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, when Elias was only 21, he fled to Holland. Later; he emigrated to London and then to America in 1691, settling in the region of South Carolina known then as "French Santee." Elias worked as a laborer when he first arrived, operating a whip saw at a lumber mill.
Elias bought 600 acres on 5 May 1704 on the Santee River on the south side of Wambaw Creek, nearly opposite the plantation of Daniel Huger, whose daughter he married. The eastern part of Wambaw Plantation is now "Hampton Plantation".
Elias married Margaret Huger on August 17, 1704. She was born on February 21, 1678 in La Rochelle, France and emigrated to South Carolina with her family when still a child. Margaret died in 1736.

- Elias Horry II was born on December 24, 1707 in St. James, Santee, SC. He died on 18 Dec 1783. He was buried in Echaw Churchyard, St. James Santee, South Carolina.
