Eliza "Roxie" was only two years old when her parents immigrated from England. She was a Utah Pioneer, crossing the plains in Claudius Spencer's wagon train. As a young girl, she learned from her mother all the skills a pioneer wife needed: "washing the raw wool, carding it, dying it with homemade dyes, spinning it into yarn, and then weaving it into cloth. She also learned to sew, knit, make candles, dry fruit to be stored for winter, and many other things." Her husband was Bishop of the Fayette Ward of the LDS church for thirty-seven years and she was his main support. It is said that when someone died, he built the casket, she sewed the lining, and then he conducted the funeral.
This grand lady was my great grandfather's sister. She and her husband had eleven children.
