Laton Eden - Children by first wife, Elizabeth Johnson:

William Eden, b. say 1678; d. 1741. Eden attended Ryton School for his secondary education. On 7 July 1698, he was admitted pens. (ae. 19) at Peterhouse College (Cambridge University). William was a Scholar in 1698, received his M.A. in 1702 (incorporated from Glasgow, where he was a student for four years). He received his B.A. (Glasgow) in 1697 and his M.A in 1702. William Eden was ordained deacon in Durham, 21 Sept. 1701; and a priest, 19 Sept. 1703. Eden became P.C. of St. Helen, Auckland, from 1703 to 1714, Vicar of Stockton from 1714 to 1715, Rector of Elwick from 1715 to 1741, and Vicar of St. Nicholas, Durham, from 1720 to 1722. Dr. Eden appears on the Buttery R. 15 July 1698. “Mr Eden” was Inceptor in 1702. According to the Graduati William Eden became B.A. in 1697; M.A. in 1702. Will. Eden, Dunelmensis, educated at Ryton, apparently an undergraduate, was admitted to a Cosin Scholarship as above. A William Eden was inst. R. of Elwick, Co. Durham, in 1715, resigning the Vio. of Stockton, to which he was instituted in 1714: his living was vacant by death in 1741. He was, according to Surtees, son of Layton Eden, R. of Hartburn. Surtees iii. 86, 187. Layton (Laton) Eden graduated from Peterhouse in 1673.[19]
Elizabeth Eden, b. say 1680. The diary of Thomas Gyll notes in his entry of Oct. 1766: “[t]he latter end of this month died at Croft, Mrs. [Elizabeth] Smales, widow of my old cousin, Smales of Gilling. She was above 80 years old.”[20] She m. Rev. Francis Smales, rector successively of Wycliffe, Kirkby Stephen and of Brignal. He was b. at Gilling, Yorkshire, ca. 1678, son of Matthew and Anne (Smithson) Smales, and was bur. Brignal 22 May 1730. His will was dated 3 March 1724 at Brignal, and proved 20 Jan. 1751/2 at York. Smales attended Sedbergh for his secondary education. He was admitted to St. John’s College, Cambridge, 11 May 1696, aged 18, B.A., 1699/1700, M.A., 1703. 1696. He became a Fellow from 1702 to 1708, Rector of Kirkby Stephen, Yorkshire, Rector of Wycliffe from 1706 to 17330, and Vicar of Brignal from 1707 to 1730.[21]
