About Rev. Laton Eden, Vicor of Hartburn

[Rev.] Layton Eden, Vicar of Hartburn, was born at his mother’s seat, Layton, Durham, England, about 1654, son of Col. John and Catherine (Layton) Eden;[1][2] and died at Hartburn parish, Northumberland, England, 11 December 1735, aged 90.[3][4][5] He married, first, at Brignal, Yorkshire, 16 May 1678, Elizabeth Johnson,[6] daughter of Ralph Johnson, Vicar of Brignal.

He married, second, about 1686, Elizabeth Aynsley, daughter of William and Susan (Gaile) Aynsely of Highlaws, Northumberland. She died 22 May 1709, was buried at Hartburn 24 May 1709. The register read, “Elizabeth, the wife of Mr Laton Edon vicar of Hartburn who died the 22 of this Instant and Buried in the Quire day afforesaid.”[7]

He married, third, at Hartburn, 27 November 1709, Margaret Dove,[8] daughter of Robert and Anne (Ottway) Dove. The register read, “Mr Layton Eden vicar of Hartburn and Mrs Margaret Dove of Highlaws was married with a license.”[9] Margaret Dove was baptized at Tynemouth, 10 May 1687,[10][11] and was buried in St. Andrew’s Cemetery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 21 December 1773.[12]

Young Layton attended Brignall in Yorkshire for his secondary education.

On 30 April 1670, at the age of 16, Layton Eden was admitted to Peterhouse, Cambridge University. He matriculated in 1670, and became a scholar that same year. He earned his B.A. in 1673–74, and his M.A. in 1677. He was ordained as a deacon (Durham) on 19 September 1675. Rev. Eden served as Vicar of Hartburn from his appointment on 15 July 1685 to his death in 1735.[13][14][15]

An entry for 20 October 1717 in the diary of Nicholas Bee notes,

“[u]ncle said he would never furnish the new house; if I behaved well he would leave that to me—he thought either this living or Mr. Layton Eden’s would fall to my share—he had a bolt to shoot, which he thought would hitt, he generally did, etc. In the Bishop of Durham’s gift—worth 200l. per annum.”[16]

According to Canon Alder Gofton, the present Rector of Whalton parish, Rev. Eden was a much-loved Vicar and controlled parish life for 50 years.

In 1714/15, Mr Laton Edon Vicar of Hartburn was tithed 6d, “collected throughout the parish for a loss by fire att Morpeth Abbey for Robt Wilkinson.”

On 29 May 1729, Laton Eden, Vicar of Hartburn, signed his name and put his seal unto his Last Will and Testament:[18]

In the Name of God Amen I Laton Eden of Hartburn in the County of Northumberland Clerk and Vicar of this Vicaridge of Hartburn being att _sent in good Health and Sound and disposing memory (praised be God for the same) do make this my last Will and Testament in manner and fform following (that is to say). First and primary all I give and bequeath my Soul to the Almighty God my Creator, providing through his Infinite mercy, and the intercession of my Redeemer Jesus Christ to be made a partaker of our everlasting Glory, my body to be buryed in the Church of Hartburn, in Such decent manner as to my Executors hereafter named Shall be thought convenient. Item which said all my Children by my former wife have been Provided for, and received their Portions some years ago. I therefore Give to thou oath one Shilling as a Legacy, with an intention that they may not Claim any part of Share of the personall Estate whereof I am now, or when at my decease. I Shall then be ssessed off. Item I give devise and bequeath unto my daughter Jane Eden the Summe of one hundred pounds to be paid to her within six months after my decease. Item all the rest and residue of my Estate of what kind or nature soever I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Margaret Eden (Incase She happens to survive and outlive me the said Laton Eden) But incase she happens to dye before me the Said Laton Eden, Then and Such case, I give and bequeath the Said the said unto my daughter Jane Eden: And in case my Said wife does Survive me aforesaid; Then I doe hereby make and appoint her Sole Executrix of this my Last Will and Testament; But if it Shall please God that She dye before me; Then I do hereby unto make and appoint my said Daughter Jane Sole Executrix of this my Last Will and I doe hereby revoke all former wills And do declare this to be my Last Will and Testament. William Eden, b. say 1678; d. 1741. Eden attended Ryton School for his secondary education. On 7 July 1698, he was admitted pens. (ae. 19) at Peterhouse College (Cambridge University). William was a Scholar in 1698, received his M.A. in 1702 (incorporated from Glasgow, where he was a student for four years). He received his B.A. (Glasgow) in 1697 and his M.A in 1702. William Eden was ordained deacon in Durham, 21 Sept. 1701; and a priest, 19 Sept. 1703. Eden became P.C. of St. Helen, Auckland, from 1703 to 1714, Vicar of Stockton from 1714 to 1715, Rector of Elwick from 1715 to 1741, and Vicar of St. Nicholas, Durham, from 1720 to 1722. Dr. Eden appears on the Buttery R. 15 July 1698. “Mr Eden” was Inceptor in 1702. According to the Graduati William Eden became B.A. in 1697; M.A. in 1702. Will. Eden, Dunelmensis, educated at Ryton, apparently an undergraduate, was admitted to a Cosin Scholarship as above. A William Eden was inst. R. of Elwick, Co. Durham, in 1715, resigning the Vio. of Stockton, to which he was instituted in 1714: his living was vacant by death in 1741. He was, according to Surtees, son of Layton Eden, R. of Hartburn. Surtees iii. 86, 187. Layton (Laton) Eden graduated from Peterhouse in 1673.[19]
Elizabeth Eden, b. say 1680. The diary of Thomas Gyll notes in his entry of Oct. 1766: “[t]he latter end of this month died at Croft, Mrs. [Elizabeth] Smales, widow of my old cousin, Smales of Gilling. She was above 80 years old.”[20] She m. Rev. Francis Smales, rector successively of Wycliffe, Kirkby Stephen and of Brignal. He was b. at Gilling, Yorkshire, ca. 1678, son of Matthew and Anne (Smithson) Smales, and was bur. Brignal 22 May 1730. His will was dated 3 March 1724 at Brignal, and proved 20 Jan. 1751/2 at York. Smales attended Sedbergh for his secondary education. He was admitted to St. John’s College, Cambridge, 11 May 1696, aged 18, B.A., 1699/1700, M.A., 1703. 1696. He became a Fellow from 1702 to 1708, Rector of Kirkby Stephen, Yorkshire, Rector of Wycliffe from 1706 to 17330, and Vicar of Brignal from 1707 to 1730.[21] Children:

Rev. and Jane Smales had two children: Francis Smales, b. 19 Feb. 1757/8, d. Feb. 1829, solicitor; m. St. Oswald’s, Durham, 4 Sept. 1784, Ann (Radcliffe) Lightbody; and Anne Smales, wife of John Wilson of Thorcroft, Yorkshire.

Ralph Eden, bap. Hartburn, 11 June 1687;[29] d. Yorkshire. Ralph attended Houghton-le-Spring, Durham, for his secondary education. Like his father, Ralph attended Cambridge University, entering Peterhouse in 1705. On 11 April 1705, he was admitted pens. (ae. 17). He was a scholar in 1705, and matriculated in 1705–6. Ralph Eden was ordained a deacon (York) in June 1718 and a priest in May 1719. He later became P.C. of St. Margaret, Durham, 1722/32; deprived for immorality.[30]
