About Elizabeth Garland

Biography

Madge Garland's letter to Stephanie Walker in 1981 it was stated, 'The Garlands were said, I think by my father [Dr. John Peter Garland] to have come to Ireland from Yorkshire. This I imagine referred to earlier generations than my G'parents [grandparents]. Garlands also said to have lived in Lucan, a large village about 8 miles from Dublin. It is possible that Grand-father Garland was born there, though this is just surmise. Edward and Elizabeth were cousins and met for the first time on a coach trip. [They] .. Had been unaware of each other's existence. They lived in a small house in North Dublin address -unknown [lower Sherrard Street -confirmed by the Deed Memorial re: the family settlement in the Chancery case of Garland v Garland &c.] and then moved to North Circular Road, near to Phoenix Park to a larger residence. They were hospitable people & Sunday luncheons were a feature. They were keen supporters of Parnell and remained faithful to him when he became cold-shouldered by politicians and clergy. [np] During a period of prosperity G'father was negotiating to buy a large house surrounded by some acres, situated in a village called Palmerstone near Lucan .. [she wrote] ..the spelling may be Palmerston. Unfortunately losses on the stock exchange put an end to that project. According to my mother, Grand-mother Garland was a kindly and charming old lady. Grand-father, she considered, rather demeaning.' - the letter's extract has been placed amongst the family source material.

Further evidence to be sought to confirm the record as that of Elizabeth Garland's niece. Fr. Joe Garland in a letter, referred to an 'Anne Garland he knew when he was a boy', but was very curious to know 'how she fitted into the family'.
