About Elizabeth Hewes
Betsey married her sister's husband, Julius Hewes, after her sister died young at the age of 34, in the year 1799. Betsey was 14 years younger than her sister, marrying at the age of 20. Mrs. Hewes was a medium sized, stout built woman, had brown hair and eyes. She was a good mother, and a woman in every way worthy to be the wife of a pioneer.
"Betsey Ann was an excellent woman, skilled in spinning and weaving, and in all the housewifely arts of our grandfather's days. Before the time of roads many trips had to be made to their market, Hampden, to carry corn and wheat to be ground, and get things at the store, and much of the time Mrs. Hewes went alone, carrying a baby. She would put the baby and grist on the back of their horse with herself, and on reaching the pong would put the baby, grist and bridle in the boat and row across to the opposite shore, the horse swimming beside the boat. On reaching the shore, the horse would shake himself and Mrs. Hewes would put the grist and baby on his back, and mounting herself would wend her way through the woods, the path marked only by spotted trees. When the grist was ground and the trading done she would return the same way. On one of these trips she was chased by a bear." This is from of a letter that was put in the Hewes family Bible. It was originally signed by J.H. Crocker, P.A. Bishop, and Willis Hewes. Hermon, Sept., 12th 1883
