About Elizabeth Sarah Green

1) - On 10 Nov 1995, Royce Culpepper (HRCULPEP is Royce's aol e-mail address) supplied:

1) Dates and place of birth and death for Lewis Green, Sr. and date and place of birth for his wife Elizabeth Lauderdale (daughter of James (Maitland) Lauderdale of Scotland).

2) Limited information re descendants of Zachariah Green, one of the sons of Lewis and Elizabeth Green, Sr.

2) - 10 Mar 1988 e-mail from "Cathy" cgphoto@hotmail.com, in regard to the questions (a) "You list Elizabeth (Sarah) as the daughter of James Maitland Lauderdale (the immigrant) - somewhere along the way I have Elizabeth & Sarah down as separate daughters, and really would like to "correct" my files. Can you shed any more light or share the info indicating that they are one? (b) - Also, can you supply any sources that support Elizabeth as truly being a daughter of James Maitland Lauderdale? Cousin Roland

Hi Roland,

I too kind of got lost in the midst of all my genealogy. Especially with all this Lauderdale-Maitland "stuff". In answer to your first question, I believe there is an Elizabeth Sarah Lauderdale and a Sarah Lauderdale, sisters. I received this info from rmturner@ro.com (Robert and Winona Turner) they also have a home page http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/t/u/r/Winona-Brown-Turner-Alab...

Also my decendancy chart shows both. As far as sources, I am working on that. So far I just have what I have got from you and other "cousins" on the net. I plan to go to my LDS church at try to verify this myself.

I'll let you know. Thanks for the gedcom, yes I can read it.
Wish me luck! Thanks, Bye,Cathy

Roland, James Maitland Lauderdale had a daughter named Elizabeth. In later years she was married to a Martin, I believe. Whether she was Lewis' wife, I do not know. However, Lewis (Green) did marry an Elizabeth Lauderdale. However, a William Lauderdale, of the same era as James, lived right across the Roanoke River in Mecklenburg Co., Va from Lewis. Perhaps?

I have seen others' info that said that James Maitland had only one child which did not include Elizabeth. This James was of the noble line. Perhaps "our" James Maitland was of another. I do not have proof that Esther Kilgore was the daughter of Robert & Winny... just the accepted printed material of eastern Kentucky.

However, Esther did live in Caswell Co., NC just across the river from Lewis Green. Hope this helps. Larry

Thanks for the prompt response!

Could this William Lauderdale (whom you suspect to be the the father of the Elizabeth Lauderdale who married Lewis Green, Sr.) have been the son of the James Maitland Lauderdale, called "The Immigrant"? If so, naming a daughter Elizabeth, after his sister, would make sense.

I found the following in my files re William Lauderdale:
William (b. ca 1734) is reported to have gone to Rhea County, TN and lived for a while, then went to Hamilton county, TN where his name is on file.

William was appointed by Governor Blount, on 1 Nov 1790, as an Ensign of the Green County Militia.
About 1794, William and his brother James left Virginia and journeyed to Tennessee. In 1819, the Tennessee Legislature passed an Act creating Hamilton County. The Act provided that three men were to be appointed to select a place for the holding of Court in the new county; William Lauderdale was one of these three men.

What do you think? Roland

There is a website (www.Gendex.com) who traces this family back to 1190. I have a question about Lewis Green and Elizabeth (Sarah) Lauderdale. It says that some sources list her last name as being SALYER. I also would like to know the level of reliability of this report. Thanks, Myra

Lauderdales are descended from James Maitland Lauderdale, the Emigrant, who settled in Pennsylvania around 1714. He is thought to have moved from southwest Scotland, where the Lauderdale name is known in the 18th century, to Northern Ireland and thence to North America. See History of the Lauderdales in America Heritage, 1998, Clint Lauderdale, mailto:clarlen@aol.com

We don't know from whom James Lauderdale, the Emigrant was descended, and he made no claims to be descended from the Earls of Lauderdale. Equally, he was firm in his assertion that he was a Maitland by origin, and this is the tradition which he handed down to his children and grandchildren and which was formally recorded by James Shelby Lauderdale in 1880. This refers to a meeting between his uncle Sam, and Dr David Lauderdale who met in 1830, and discovered that they shared a common family tradition. Another Lauderdale from New York was met in 1880 in St Louis with a similar tale.

Lauderdale as a family name, not connected with the title, first appears in the Scottish parish records in Galloway in the early 18th century with the birth of Jean Lauderdale in 1737, the daughter of James Lauderdale at Beith, Ayr.

Maitlands have lived in or been connected with Galloway since 1360, and our understanding of James the Emigrant is that he came from that part of Scotland, so the combination of geography, name and his family tradition makes it almost certain that he was a Maitland by origin, and as such, related by blood to the Earls of Lauderdale, but not descended from them.

Washington Co., VA

Elizabeth, who appears in the records of Washington County in 1797 as “old and infirm” and gave power of attorney to “my son-in-law Moses Foley.” She died about 1803, intestate. Appraisal of here estate was presented to the court by Zachariah Green.
