About Elizabeth Moore ‘Betsy’ Sutton

Elizabeth aka Betsy WARD was born ABT 1790, and died AFT 1851. She married Elijah SUTTON on ABT 1816. She was the daughter of John WARD and Catherine aka Caty and Katy McDANIEL.


1/4 Cherokee Her parents were John Ward son of Bryan Ward (a ttrader in the Cherokee Nation and Ann?) This Elizabeth "Betsy" Ward is not to be confused with the Elizabeth "Betsy" Ward , daughter of Bryan Ward and Nancy Kingfisher( Fullblood -1/2 Deleware and 1/2 Cherokee) Nancy was a Chief on the Cherokee Nation East Tribal She was able to overturn any decision of the Tribl councils Chiefs. Elizabeth was married to Elijah Sutton. She and her five children left with an uncle by marriage on the Trail Of Tears and settled in the Goingsnake district of the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma. Her husband Elijah did not accompany her on the Trail Of Tears and he died in Franklin County Georgia near the Alabama line.

“Betsy is listed in the OLD SETTLER ROLLS of the Cherokee Tribl Nation. I have the Cherokee Tribe Rolls.”

The next person on the census is Te-Las-Sha-Ske, head of of a family of 8. This is a Cherokee man! It is not Betsy; although many people have listed this as Betsy Sutton's "Indian" name. On the 1817 Reservation Roll, you will find him listed as Tee-las-ska-ask living below the Little Telico River near Si-tu-wa-kee. Elijah Sutton and his wife Betsy are on the same roll, living elsewhere.
