About Elizabeth Sly

Notes

According to his biographer R. I. Klemm, Valentine Cook was born around 1730, probably in Yorkshire, England. ["Days, Deeds and Descendants of Captain Valentine Cook"; historical evidence] It is nearly universally agreed that his parents were John Hamilton and Elizabeth (Eaton) Cook. ["Biographical Sketch of the Rev. Valentine Cook"]

The owners of Cook's Old Mill, Fred and Barbara Ziegler, have stated that, around the time he was born, Valentine's family moved from Yorkshire to London. It is deduced that his father, John, died there around 1736. ["Biographical Sketch of the Rev. Valentine Cook"]

In 1737, Valentine's mother married William Sly. ["Days, Deeds and Descendants of Captain Valentine Cook"] At that point the family migrated to Amsterdam, where Valentine (called "Felty Koch" in records) and his brother were educated in both German and English. ["Biographical Sketch of the Rev. Valentine Cook"] It may be inferred that Valentine and his brother went on to move to York, Pennsylvania, perhaps as indentured servants. [Chalkley, Vol. II]

Disputed Origins

“Elizabeth Eaton Cook is the daughter of Benjamin Eaton and Mary (Coombs) Eaton.”

However, that Elizabeth Sturtevant (Birth: between circa 1702 and 1708 of, Kingston, Plymouth County, Province of Massachusetts, Colonial America Death: May 16, 1790 (81-92) Keene, Cheshire County, New Hampshire) was the wife of Cornelius Sturtevant. Their marriage intentions are recorded as “25 Jan 1728/9”. Benjamin Eaton, housewright, died in Kingston, Plymouth, Massachusetts, between 23 April 1745, the date of his will, and 7 Dec 1745, date the will was proven. The people named in his will included “ daughter Elizabeth Stertevant.”

The parents here are listed as Edward Eden Eaton and Sarah Eden Eaton. Why do they both have the same middle name Eden? The "Eden Eatons" are not Elizabeth Eaton Cook's parents.
