About Ellen Hanbury

From Re: Benjamin Franklin's relatives ? 1999

William Temple Franklin had a son, Theophile (b. 1785/1790), with Blanche Caillot, and a daughter, Ellen (b. 1798), with Ellen Johnson D'Evelin, sister of his father's second wife, Mary D'Evelin. Ellen Franklin was raised by her grandfather, William Franklin. According to Willard Randall, author of A Little Revenge: Benjamin Franklin & His Son, (Boston, Little, Brown and Company, 1984, p. 494), "Temple abandoned his mistress, William's sister-in-law, and his illegitimate daughter Ellen and went off to Paris. There he sired another daughter by the wife of the British ambassador." This child apparently died in infancy, as did Theophile. Ellen Franklin, however, reached adulthood and married Capel Hanbury. They had a daughter Maria Hanbury, said to be living in Nice, France in the 1870s, who died unmarried, thus ending the line for William Franklin. If anyone has information about Maria or Capel Hanbury, please let me know. Thank you--Elly Fitzig, Manager, Descendants Project, The Friends of Franklin, Inc.

In this profile you write that Ellen Franklin Hanbury had only one daughter Maria Hanbury, who died unmarried, thus ending the line for William Franklin.

According to information in our family this statement should be wrong.

Ellen Franklin Hanbury allegedly also had a son named Benjamin, born in 1835. The father of Benjamin was Dionyz Justh, who met Ellen when he was stationed in Paris as a soldier of Austrian Landswehr (ground forces of the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy). After he was released from his obligation to serve in the army, Dionyz left Paris in 1841 without Ellen but with his son Benjamin and went back home to Austria-Hungary (today Slovakia). Benjamins descendants are still alive here in Slovakia thus William's line still continues here.

This line was allegedly confirmed by Prof. Dr. Thomas D. Marzik of the St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia.

Are you able to verify and correct this information?
